Sugar apple (custard apple)
š Sugar Apple ā Sitaphal / Custard Apple
Sugar appleĀ (Annona squamosa) is one of the most attractive tropical fruits for a diversified plantation in Karnataka. In India it is commonly called Sitaphal, Seethaphal or Custard Apple.
It is different from cherimoya (Annona cherimola)Ā and atemoya (Annona Ć atemoya), although all belong to the AnnonaĀ group.

Main market | Fresh premium fruit |
š What makes Sugar Apple special?
The fruit consists of many fused segments. When ripe, the segments become soft and the white flesh separates easily from the skin.
The eating experience is:
Very sweet ā creamy ā aromatic ā custard-like.
This is why it has such a strong premium fresh-fruit market in India.
It is also naturally attractive for farm-direct sales, because customers often prefer freshly harvested custard apple over fruit that has travelled long distances.
š³ Tree characteristics
Sugar apple is generally a small-to-medium-sized tree, which makes it easier to manage than many large tropical fruit trees.
It can be particularly useful in a mixed orchard because you can maintain it at a manageable height with pruning.
Ideal conditions
āļø Full sunš± Well-drained soilš„ Warm climateš§ Irrigation during dry periodsš Good organic matterš¬ļø Good airflow
It is relatively tolerant of dry conditions once established, but water stress during flowering and fruit development can reduce fruit size and yield.
šø Flowering & pollination ā VERY IMPORTANT
This is one of the most important things to understand if you're planning a commercial orchard.
Sugar apple flowers are protogynousāthe female and male phases do not perfectly overlap.
This can result in poor natural pollination and irregular fruit set.
Therefore, for premium commercial production, hand pollination can be highly beneficial.
šļø Hand pollination
The basic process is:
Collect pollen during the male phase ā transfer pollen to receptive female flowers.
With proper timing, hand pollination can significantly improve:
Fruit set
Fruit shape
Fruit uniformity
Marketable fruit percentage
For a commercial plantation, I would consider manual/assisted pollination as part of the production system, especially if you want large, well-shaped fruit.
š Fruit quality
For premium fruit production, I would select trees that consistently produce:
Large fruit + symmetrical shape + fewer seed cavities + high sweetness + creamy flesh.
This is important because seed count and fruit shape can vary considerably among trees.
š± Important cultivars
If you want to establish a premium sugar-apple orchard, don't simply purchase generic āSitaphal.ā
Some Indian selections/cultivars worth investigating include:
Balanagar
A well-known custard-apple selection grown in India.
Arka Sahan
An important hybrid custard appleĀ developed by ICAR-IIHR. It is actually an atemoya-type hybrid, not ordinary Annona squamosa, and is particularly interesting for commercial production.
APK-1
An improved custard-apple selection associated with Tamil Nadu agricultural research.
For your Karnataka project, I would strongly consider comparing traditional Sitaphal with Arka SahanĀ rather than treating them as the same crop.
š³ Arka Sahan ā important for your project
If your objective is commercial premium fruit, this deserves special attention.
Arka SahanĀ is an improved hybrid involving Annona squamosaĀ and A. cherimolaĀ genetics. It was developed by ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru.
Its commercial characteristics include:
Large fruit
Good pulp quality
Attractive flavour
Improved fruit quality
Better commercial potential than many traditional seedlings
Because you are looking at plantation development around Karnataka, Arka Sahan is particularly worth evaluating.
š§ Irrigation
For commercial production:
Drip irrigation + mulchingĀ is my preferred approach.
Don't keep the soil permanently saturated.
During:
šø floweringš fruit setš fruit enlargement
maintaining appropriate soil moisture is important.
āļø Pruning
Pruning is useful for:
Keeping the tree manageable
Encouraging productive new shoots
Improving sunlight penetration
Improving air circulation
Making hand pollination easier
Making harvesting easier
For your plantation, I would establish the tree with a low, open canopyĀ rather than allowing a tall uncontrolled tree.
š Pests & diseases
Important issues can include:
Fruit borers
Mealybugs
Scale insects
Fruit flies
Leaf-feeding insects
Fungal fruit problems
Root problems under waterlogged conditions
Fruit fly managementĀ becomes particularly important as the fruit approaches maturity.
