History and Global Production

  • Traditional Use: Bark has traditionally supplied tannins for leather treatment and dyeing. Its wood has also been used for fuel, boat ribs, and tool handles.

  • Global Spread: Found throughout tropical Asia, including India's Sundarbans and other eastern coastal mangrove forests. It commonly grows along sheltered tidal swamps, creek banks, and the interior margins of mangrove forests. Its pale, peeling bark and angular propagules help distinguish it from related species.
