History and Global Production

  • Traditional Use: Wood has traditionally supplied construction materials and fuel. In some Southeast Asian communities, the fruit is eaten after cooking and soaking to reduce its strong astringency.

  • Global Spread: Found in tropical Indo-Pacific mangrove forests, from India and Sri Lanka through Southeast Asia to northern Australia and Pacific islands. It often grows along estuary margins with substantial freshwater inflow and is recognized by its yellow-orange flowers and angular, cigar-shaped propagules.
