Mango belongs to the genus Mangifera, and ICAR describes the mango as a large evergreen tree capable of developing a substantial, dome-shaped crown.

🌱 Climate

Alphonso performs best under warm tropical/subtropical conditions, with:

  • Plenty of direct sunlight

  • A distinct dry period that supports flowering

  • Good air circulation

  • Protection from prolonged waterlogging

  • Adequate moisture during vegetative growth and fruit development

For Karnataka, site selection is particularly important because mango performance varies with soil, rainfall pattern and local climate. TNAU notes that red soils of Dharwad and red lateritic soils of Belagavi can be good mango soils.

🌍 Soil

Preferred:

  • Deep red loam

  • Red lateritic soil

  • Sandy loam

  • Well-drained fertile soil

Target pH: approximately 6.5–8.0.

Avoid:

  • Permanently waterlogged land

  • Very shallow soil

  • Hardpan/rock immediately below the root zone

  • Poorly drained heavy soil

🌳 Planting

For a conventional orchard, 8 × 8 m is a practical spacing, giving approximately 63 plants/acre. TNAU also lists conventional mango spacing of approximately 7–10 m and high-density systems around 5 × 5 m.

Important: For commercial Alphonso, use true-to-type grafted plants, not random seedlings. TNAU specifically recommends grafts for commercial mango planting.

💧 Irrigation

Young grafts require regular irrigation while establishing. Once established, irrigation should be managed according to soil, rainfall, tree age and crop stage rather than keeping the soil continuously wet.

Drip irrigation is particularly useful for commercial orchards. ICAR has reported yield improvement and fertilizer savings associated with drip irrigation in mango.

✂️ Canopy management

For Alphonso, canopy management is extremely important.

The objective is to create a tree with:

Good sunlight + good air movement + manageable height + productive branches.

Remove:

  • Rootstock suckers

  • Dead branches

  • Diseased branches

  • Crossing branches

  • Excessively crowded shoots

  • Low branches that interfere with orchard operations

TNAU recommends systematic canopy management and pruning of overlapping/intercrossing and weak branches.

🥭 Fruit production

Alphonso has an important characteristic called alternate/biennial bearing, meaning the crop can naturally fluctuate between heavier and lighter bearing years. It is also known for the physiological disorder spongy tissue, which is particularly associated with Alphonso.

Therefore, commercial production should focus on:

soil management → balanced nutrition → irrigation → canopy management → flowering management → pest/disease management → proper harvesting.

📅 Harvest

Mango harvesting generally occurs during March–June, depending on variety and location.

Alphonso is particularly attractive commercially because it is listed among mango varieties suitable for processing and export.

💰 Commercial potential

Alphonso can be considered for:

Premium fresh-fruit orchard→ Pulp/processing→ Export-oriented production→ Agro-tourism mango farm→ Premium farm-to-consumer sales

There is also evidence of Alphonso cultivation in Karnataka, including northern Karnataka, showing that the cultivar can be grown outside the traditional Konkan belt when suitable orchard conditions and management are provided.
