🌳 Wood Apple — Bael / Elephant Apple

Wood apple can refer to two different fruits in India, so the botanical name is important.

  • Bael — Aegle marmelos: commonly called Bengal quince, bael, bilva, or stone apple.

  • Wood apple — Limonia acidissima: a different species, also called kaitha/elephant apple.

For plantation planning, I would treat them as two separate fruit crops.

🍏 1. Bael — Aegle marmelos

Characteristic

Bael

Scientific name

Aegle marmelos

Family

Rutaceae

Fruit

Round/oval, hard shell

Flesh

Yellow-orange

Taste

Sweet, aromatic

Tree

Deciduous

Climate

Tropical/subtropical

Drought tolerance

High

Main uses

Fresh pulp, beverages, preserves

Cultural value

High in India

Bael is an extremely hardy tree and can perform well in hot and relatively dry areas. It is therefore interesting for lower-water plantation models.

The ripe pulp is traditionally used for bael sherbet, beverages, preserves and sweets.

🍈 2. True Wood Apple — Limonia acidissima

This is the fruit that is often specifically called wood apple or elephant apple.

The fruit has an exceptionally hard, woody shell.

Inside is a brownish, aromatic pulp with a distinctive:

sweet + sour + earthy + slightly smoky flavour.

Characteristic

Wood Apple

Scientific name

Limonia acidissima

Family

Rutaceae

Fruit shell

Extremely hard/woody

Pulp

Brown, sticky/aromatic

Flavour

Sweet-sour, distinctive

Tree

Thorny

Climate

Tropical/dry tropical

Drought tolerance

Drinks, chutney, preserves, traditional foods

🌳 Why I like Wood Apple for a plantation

For your income-generation plantation and forest-restoration concept, Wood Apple has an interesting combination of characteristics:

☀️ Hardy tree

It can tolerate hot and relatively dry conditions better than many tropical fruit crops.

💧 Lower irrigation dependence

Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant.

🌱 Adaptable

It can grow in less-than-perfect soils, although good soil and water management will improve growth and fruiting.

🍹 Processing potential

The fruit can be converted into:

  • Beverages

  • Sherbets

  • Chutneys

  • Jams

  • Jellies

  • Preserves

  • Pulp products

That gives you more options than selling only fresh fruit.

🌸 Flowering & fruiting

Wood apple trees generally take several years to reach commercial bearing, especially when grown from seed.

For a commercial orchard, I would therefore investigate grafted/budded plants from a known productive mother tree rather than relying entirely on seedlings.

Vegetatively propagated plants also give you greater consistency in:

fruit size → pulp quality → flavour → productivity.

🌱 Growing conditions

☀️ Sun

Full sun is ideal.

🌱 Soil

It can tolerate relatively poor soils, but for commercial production I would still prefer:

  • Deep soil

  • Good drainage

  • Reasonable fertility

  • Good organic matter

💧 Irrigation

Young plants require regular irrigation.

Once established, the tree is considerably more drought tolerant.

🌬️ Wind

Because the tree can become large and has a spreading structure, choose a location with reasonable wind protection.
